About News Feeds

At Small Business Trends, we've made it easy for you to stay up to date on our daily postings. We've syndicated our content through something called "RSS Feeds" or in everyday terminology, "News Feeds."

Using a newsreader you can catch up on all the latest postings on Small Business Trends and your other favorite weblogs, all at one time. Read below to find out how.

News Feeds and Newsreaders Background

If you prefer to catch up on the latest news from your favorite weblogs -- and even major news sites such as Reuters -- all at one time, RSS feeds make it simple to do so.

The way it works is that the news sites and weblogs publish an "RSS feed" of their content. RSS stands for Rich Site Summary, and is only readable by special software programs known as "newsreaders" or "feedreaders" or "news aggregators." Using one of these programs you can read the headlines and content from many sites all in one place.

Using a newsreader program is almost like using email -- without the downsides. You and you alone choose what you want to have access to in your newsreader program. No one can send you any unwanted communications.

Using a Newsreader Service (Beginners)

If you are new at using news feeds (isn't that why you're reading this in the first place?), the easiest solution is to subscribe to one of the free newsreader services.

Bloglines is one. Feedster is another. Both are fairly easy to use. All you need is Internet access and a browser. And both are free.

The Small Business Trends news feed already is updated automatically in Bloglines. To sign up for Bloglines, click the insignia below, and follow the instructions:

Using a Newsreader Program (Intermediate)

If you are past the beginner stage, and already know something about RSS feeds, then you'll be pleased to know that we provide two RSS feeds: an XML 2.0 feed and the new Atom XML feed.

To use RSS feeds you will need a "feedreader" or "newsreader" or "news aggregator" program, as they are called. One such program is Feedreader. Or visit the Yahoo Directory for a list of news aggregator programs.

This orange XML insignia leads to the Small Business Trends XML 2.0 feed code:

To use the RSS feeds, put your cursor over either the orange XML insignia or the Atom link, and "right click" with your mouse. Select "copy shortcut." Then paste the news feed shortcut into your newsreader software following the program's instructions.

Our news feed is updated each time we post something new on Small Business Trends. Your newsreader will automatically pick up the new postings for your reading pleasure. That's all there is to it!
